Certified Restaurant Server Practice Exam

When servers encounter an intoxicated customer, the appropriate course of action is to avoid serving them alcohol and alert management. This approach is essential for several reasons.

Firstly, serving alcohol to an already intoxicated individual can lead to further impairment, increasing the risk of accidents or disruptive behavior within the establishment. Over-serving can also lead to legal liabilities for both the server and the restaurant, as establishments have a responsibility to ensure the safety of their patrons.

Secondly, notifying management allows for a coordinated response. Management may have additional resources or procedures in place to handle the situation properly, such as providing a safe way for the customer to leave the premises or ensuring they are accompanied by a sober friend or family member.

This proactive measure also helps maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all customers, as the presence of an intoxicated individual can create discomfort for others. Overall, this response reflects responsible service practices and aligns with the legal and ethical standards expected in the food and beverage industry.
